SUBJECT: Burglaries — Timely Warning
DATE: May 2, 2016

Campus Safety took a total of five burglary reports that occurred sometime between Thursday, April 28 and Saturday, April 30, 2016. Three of the burglaries occurred in North Hall, one occurred in Gibbs Hall, and one in Sorensen Hall.

Burglary involves the unlawful entry of a room and does not necessarily involve forced entry. In three of the incidents entry was made through unlocked doors, one report indicates the room was locked, and it is unknown in one incident if the door was locked or not.

In all of the incidents, items were removed from the room. The value of the items varies.

Each year in the U.S. there are more than five million home burglaries. Nine out of 10 of these crimes are preventable. The risk of being burglarized can be greatly reduced by taking simple steps to make your room more difficult to enter and less enticing to would-be burglars.

·        Ensure you are locking your room each time you leave or when occupants are sleeping.

·        Communicate with your roommate to ensure they are also locking the door.

·        Avoid posting your location or checking in on social media. Doing so tells others you are not at home.

·        If your building has electronic access control are reminded not to prop exterior doors or allow “tailgating” into security buildings.

·        Report suspicious activity or strange, unaccompanied individuals to Campus Safety at x8888.

There have not been any arrests in the incidents. Anyone with information is encouraged to contact Campus Safety at x8888 or the Saint Peter Police Department at 507-931-1550.
